Juicing for Eczema- How You Can Treat Eczema Naturally
Eczema is a very common skin disorder that can be quite unpleasant. I should know- I had it as a child! Although I never got the chance to treat eczema using juicing, I did find homeopathic remedies to be very helpful. Therefore, that is definitely an option to keep in mind. If you don’t know what eczema is, it is pretty much a form of skin rash that is very itchy, dry and red. It can also be scaly or weep.
There are several different factors that can contribute to eczema, but diet and lifestyle are the most important. If you have eczema, you might find that making some of these changes will help reduce flare ups or eliminate your eczema altogether!
- Eat lots of raw foods. Raw foods can have a dramatic effect on skin conditions. However, you don’t need to go as far as a 100% raw food diet- do your best to get around 60% raw foods and you should see results
Do juice fasts and juice cleanses. Eczema can be your body’s way of telling you that it has some toxins built up. A 1-3 day juice fast is a great way to rid your body of unwanted toxins. If you are even more dedicated, a liver or gallbladder cleanse is an excellent way to clear your system of unwanted waste that can contribute to eczema.
Eat a diet that is high in fiber and whole foods. That means you should be avoiding all forms of sugar and processed/refined foods (white flour is your enemy!). Whole foods (like raw foods and whole grains) contribute to a healthy digestive system, which helps your body eliminate toxins and waste properly. Eczema can be very closely linked to regular, healthy bowel movements. So, if you are not regular, do your best to get yourself there through a proper diet. Regular exercise will also help of course!
Try a vegetarian or vegan diet The arachidonic acid is meat and dairy can encourage inflammation and therefore cause eczema flare ups. Switching to a vegetarian or vegan diet could result in a significant improvement of your eczema. Fish does not have arachidonic acid so you can certainly continue to eat it. The essential fatty acids will actually be beneficial to your skin condition.
Try a gluten-free diet. Eczema can be caused by allergenic foods. Although lots of people are not aware, they may have a slight allergy to gluten. In the past, several people have found that a gluten-free diet results in significant improvements in their eczema. It’s very possible that a gluten allergy is causing your flare-ups.
Aside from the lifestyle suggestions above, you can also try to get as many of these nutrients in your diet as possible from the following fruits and veggies:
- Vitamin A: Our bodies get vitamin A by converting it from carotene: parsley, carrots, kale, beet greens, broccoli, spinach, watercress, swiss chard, romaine. Zinc: ginger, parsley, garlic, turnips, cabbage, carrots, spinach, cucumbers and lettuce.
Bioflavonoids: bell peppers, broccoli, blueberries, cranberries, blackberries, cabbage, tomatoes.
Folic Acid: kale, beet greens, spinach, mustard greens, cabbage, broccoli.
Essential Fatty Acids: flax seeds, help seeds, fish oils, cold-water fish (trout, salmon, tuna, herring, mackerel, halibut and sardines are a few- please be sure to eat fish that were caught using sustainable fishing methods (aka pole and line fishing- this results in no bi-catch, that is completely wasteful and is depleting our ocean’s supply of fish and tampering with valuable ecosystems).
Probiotics: probiotics improve the functionality of your digestive system and can prevent harmful organisms from growing in your body (these might be causing your eczema). Probiotics are most easily found in probiotic yoghurt or probiotic yoghurt drinks.
As I’m sure you have noticed, there are lots of leafy greens in the lists above. If you’d like to juice these leafy greens, I would suggest purchasing a wheatgrass juicer from Purely Juicers. They have great deals on plenty of other types of juicers as well. I will be posting another link soon with a list of recipes that could help your eczema. Good luck!
